Thinking about getting a new piercing? Before you head to the mall, let’s talk about the difference between a piercing place in the mall and a professional piercing studio.

Yes - even the mall places that say they use needles. Yes, even the ones that look modern and aesthetic.

Because looking legit and being legit aren’t always the same thing.

“We Use Needles” Isn’t the Gold Standard

Many mall piercing shops now advertise needle piercings instead of piercing guns. That’s definitely better.

But a needle alone doesn’t make it professional.

What actually matters:

  • Years of apprenticeship training

  • Deep knowledge of anatomy

  • Proper sterilization protocols

  • High-quality, implant-grade jewelry and reputable suppliers

  • Experience handling complications and healing issues

A short corporate training program is not the same as a multi-year apprenticeship.

Piercing is body modification -not retail accessory service.

Jewelry Quality Makes or Breaks Healing

One of the biggest differences between a professional piercing studio and many mall chains is jewelry quality.

Professional studios typically use:

  • Implant-grade titanium (ASTM certified)

  • Solid gold (not plated)

  • Internally threaded or threadless jewelry

  • Correct sizing for swelling

  • Jewelry from reputable suppliers

Some retail stores use lower-grade “surgical steel,” gold-plated pieces, or externally threaded jewelry - which can cause irritation, allergic reactions, and longer healing times. Some even use titanium but from low end suppliers which can cause the same.

Your piercing is only as good as the jewelry in it.

Not All Tattoo Studios Are Equal Either

Here’s something people don’t talk about enough:

Just going to “any tattoo shop” isn’t automatically safer.

Some studios:

  • Don’t have a dedicated piercer

  • Treat piercing as a side service

  • Use mid-grade jewelry

  • Skip ongoing education

If you’re choosing a professional studio, look for:

  • A dedicated, experienced piercer

  • Implant-grade jewelry standards

  • A clean, procedure-focused setup

  • A portfolio that includes healed piercings

Do your research. Not all studios operate at the same level.

The “It Looks Nice” Trap

Bright lighting. Trendy branding. Cute displays.

Being inside a mall doesn’t make a place high-end, and aesthetics don’t equal medical-grade standards.

A store can look polished while still prioritizing:

  • High-volume turnover

  • Lower jewelry costs

  • Newly trained staff

Fast-fashion energy doesn’t belong in body modification.

Supporting Local Means Supporting Craft

When you choose a reputable local studio with a dedicated professional piercer, you’re supporting:

  • Skilled artists who built their reputation on quality

  • Small businesses in your community

  • Higher industry standards

  • Long-term client relationships

Corporate chains send profits elsewhere. True local studios reinvest in their education, equipment, and community.

The Bottom Line

A piercing is an intentional wound. It deserves professional standards.

That means:

  • Apprenticeship-trained piercers

  • Implant-grade jewelry

  • Proper sterilization

  • Precision placement

Convenience is nice. Healing correctly is better.

Do your homework. Your body isn’t a trend.
