TATTOO CARE DONE RIGHT!
Let’s talk strait about your tattoo care.
You & your artist have just worked hard to create your fresh new tattoo. Take good care of it! At Blue Byrd we are just as concerned as you about what happens to that new wound that looks like art, after it leaves our studio.
Top of the line medicated soaps, sterility, Ink, & disposables have been used with care to create your tattoo.
At this point we have covered your tattoo to keep out contamination from the world as you travel away from us (also to keep you from potentially contaminating others).
Now following directions will come a moment when you remove your protective covering and expose this new wound to the world.
From the point the artist covers your tattoo for travel & beyond anything that happens to your new tattoo/wound is your responsibility. It is very important that you follow our recommendations. Our care instructions come from experience to help support a successful heal. This is the tricky part, you can do everything right & Mother Nature can still decide that she wants a bite of that new tattoo. A really beautiful tattoo can turn into a disaster even if the best care is applied, this is rare but possible. Common sense will support that your percentage of success will increase exponentially if you follow knowledgeable advice from your artist.
Read through our advice, we believe this care will help you heal.
Congratulations you just got a bouncing brand new tattoo!
Now let’s get to it.
For open air healing:
Leave That Wrap and bandage Alone!
Your artist took the care to cover up your new tattoo for a very good reason - to keep bacteria & other pathogens from invading your wound and to keep others safe from your body fluids. Yes, as lovely as your new tattoo is, it is still a wound. Open flesh is a breeding ground for bacterial infections. Leave the bandage on until you have reached a safe clean environment for your first cleaning after you have left us. Excitement of having a new tattoo will make you want to remove the bandage so you can show your friends, but your friends will just have to wait until later.
Washing & moisture.
After you remove the bandage, you will want to wash your tattoo 30 min to no longer than 2 hours from the time your tattoo was covered. When you are ready for the first wash is the time to remove the wrap and not beforehand. Do not leave the wrap on overnight. Remove the wrap and wash at the same time as directed. If you are still at our studio during this time ask us if we can wash it for you. At home when washing, use warm water & liquid antibacterial or Medicated soap. Soaps are used to gently wash away any ointment, blood &/or plasma & to completely clean the area. Do not use a washcloth or anything abrasive. Washed clean hands are your best tool to wash with. If your tattoo feels slimy and slippery, you have probably been oozing plasma. When plasma dries on the skin surface, it creates thicker scabs. Try to gently remove as much of this as possible. After rinsing the soap away air dry or pat (do not rub) the area firmly with a clean paper towel to get it completely dry.
Please do not scrub your tattoo or clean it more than 3 times a day and no longer than 30 seconds each wash. Over cleaning can cause more physical damage. Over cleaning will also water log your tattoo irritating it causing oozing plasma drawing pigment out and increasing the areas susceptibility for infection to set in.
Moisture Balance is the game.
Healing a tattoo seems to be all about not to moist and not to dry. Lotions seem to work best. A fragrant free made for sensitive skin or hypoallergenic lotion with low alcohol will help you keep your tattoo just right without smothering it in oils or ointments. Your artist will recommend a brand like H2ocean or Provon lotions all very good products for this application.
Your wound should not be saturated with a product to the point that it feels wet or sticky. Maintain a level of moisture that keeps the wound flexible so that it may not crack but is still enough that the surface of the tattoo is seemingly dry about the same moisture as the rest of your skin.
Always wash your hands before applying a lotion and if you have not washed recently or have cause to think you may have had some air born dust or dirt on you, take the time to gently clean the tattoo before rubbing in any moisturizer.
OK on to the shedding.
Within a few days your tattoo will have started to build a slightly thicker layer on the surface. This thickness is because new healed skin is pushing up and replacing the layers of skin that where damaged during the tattoo. You may even have heavier scabbing where blood and plasma collected in a higher density this will vary from client to client and even tattoo to tattoo. You will not always heal the same. Your health or even the season we are in can affect this. Psssst. Winter is the best time to heal a tattoo. Pass it on!
Do not pick at this shedding skin. Sometime in 5 to 10 days your tattoo will begin to shed the damaged skin and reveal itself. If you pick you will uncover & pull out the pigment that has not yet been fully healed into the base layer of your dermis. NO PICKING. Yes it itches. NO SCRATCHING.
Some spots on you tattoo will heal slower than others just leave that last flake or scab alone and it will heal on its own.
Even after your tattoo has shed there may still be a shiny milky layer of protein that can give the illusion of the color having faded. Please wait for about 3 weeks before determining if a touch up is needed. If you’re not sure what to look for then let us look. We want you to have a bright healed tattoo just as much as you do.
Gremlins!
Problems do occur
& if they do you are to stop using lotions stop moisturizing your tattoo! If your are having any effects during healing that appear in the form of painful or excessive swelling, persistent redness or red streaking under the skin leading from the wound, excessive persistent pain, any weeping or discharging of fluids, degeneration of tissue (skin sinking into the wound) Stop the use of any care products. Only use warm water & liquid antibacterial or medicated soap and immediately contact licensed medical help. Please call us & come in if your concerns do not seem so immediate.
Do not take unusual effects lightly as infections can set in in a matter of hours after unforeseen exposure to a pathogen.
You made it! Almost.
So you didn’t get infected you didn’t use ointments you stayed clean, no hot tubs, no tanning beds, no being out in the sun while healing. You kept your stupid friends from smacking it and your dog from licking it. You get the point.
Now if you want your tattoo to stay bright longer its simple. To keep your color from fading over the long term you need to protect you tattoo from the suns UVB & UVA radiation. Just use a high sunblock or your tattoo as it can fade like the construction paper on the cork board in kindergarten.
We care about you, not just about the end product also why you chose your design. We are grateful you choose Blue Byrd for this in your life.
To show that we care we offer free touch ups from the artist that did the work. You have 6 months to come back & schedule for any repair needed that came about from fading or loses of color in any way because of the healing process during the healing process. Please take advantage of this courtesy in reasonable time.
Good luck we hope you’re happy with the job we did, now go out and do your job, take extra good care of your artwork.
Quick Care Review
1. After 30 min & before 2 hrs in a clean environment remove the protective covering from your tattoo & use warm water & liquid antibacterial or medicated soap with your clean finger tips to wash your new tattoo. Clean your tattoo this way 2 or 3 times a day. Do not recover your tattoo let it breathe under loose clean protective clothing.
2. When your tattoo feels dry and tight it’s time to use a moisturizing lotion. Use small amounts & apply with your clean finger tips. Never make your tattoo so moist that it becomes sticky. Your tattoo should stay flexible yet somewhat dry on the surface for best results.
3. Do not pick. Do not scratch!
4. Do not use ointments or oils. Light fragrant free lotions only.
5. Never put peroxide or alcohol on your tattoo.
6. If you have any painful, discoloring or weeping to the area contact licensed medical help
7. Your tattoo will begin to shed the damaged outer layers of skin this process may take a week or more. Typical
healing time for a tattoo is 2 to 3 weeks.
8. Consult back with your artist for any loss of color from your healing process.
Above is a Basic open Air Traditional way to heal your tattoo. Ask our staff about full Medicated and sterile locking! There are two more stages of Ultra care you can take to ensure an infection free heal!
